The torpedo of the seas

With its jaw lined with razor-sharp teeth and its streamlined body, the barracuda is intimidating at first sight. Yet it is one of the most fascinating species to observe while diving in Tenerife. The Canaries' endemic species

Cuvier's barracuda

Sphyraena viridensis

An endemic species of Macaronesia, Cuvier's barracuda is recognizable by its characteristic yellowish stripes on the flanks. Adults can reach 1.5 m and are encountered both alone and in dense schools of several hundred individuals swirling in a spiral.

Behaviour and feeding

An open-water predator, the barracuda mainly hunts small fish. Very curious, it does not hesitate to approach divers, fixing them with its piercing yellow eyes. This curiosity can be unsettling at first but presents no danger. Simply avoid wearing shiny jewellery that might attract it.

Where to spot barracudas

La Jaca

10 — 25 m Intermediate

One of the most consistent spots for barracuda schools. Formations of several hundred individuals swirling in circles are an unforgettable spectacle.

Montana Amarilla

8 — 20 m All levels

Groups of barracudas regularly frequent the rocky areas, often in late morning. Large solitary individuals are common.

El Condecito

5 — 15 m All levels

Sizable barracudas patrol along the volcanic rocks, particularly at the surface and in open water.

Practical tips

01

Remove jewellery

The reflections from watches and bracelets can attract barracudas. As a precaution, avoid any shiny accessories.

02

Stay still

When faced with a curious barracuda, stay still and let it approach. It will eventually move away on its own.

03

Don't flee suddenly

Sudden flight can trigger the hunting instinct. Back away slowly if you wish to create distance.

04

Look for schools in open water

Schools often form slightly above the bottom. Look into the blue and spot the silver flashes.
