Diving in winter in Tenerife

Discover why December, January and February are the ideal months to dive at Las Galletas

The season experts prefer

Contrary to popular belief, winter is the season experienced divers prefer in Tenerife. While summer draws the crowds, winter often offers superior conditions. Maximum visibility, rare species, less busy sites and water at 18-20°C perfectly manageable in a 5 mm wetsuit — here is why winter deserves serious consideration.

5 good reasons to dive in winter

01

Angel shark season

December to February is the peak season for angel sharks (Squatina squatina) in Tenerife. These critically endangered flat sharks gather on sandy bottoms in winter — a near-guaranteed encounter you won't find anywhere else in Europe.

02

Record visibility

In winter, the waters reach their maximum clarity, sometimes exceeding 30 metres on open sites. The lower winter light creates spectacular effects underwater.

03

Fewer divers at the sites

The low tourist season means less crowded sites, easier bookings and optimal personal attention from our guides. A more peaceful and often more productive dive.

04

More attractive prices

Flights, accommodation and dive packages are generally 30 to 40% cheaper than in high season. A dive trip in January is often an excellent deal.

05

Migratory species

Some species are more present in winter. In addition to angel sharks, you see more electric rays, stingrays and active moray eels in calm weather.

Recommended wetsuit

A 5 mm full wetsuit is perfectly suited to the winter 18-20°C. We offer full equipment rental on site if you prefer not to travel with your gear.

Weather and sea conditions

Winter can bring episodes of north-westerly wind. However, Tenerife benefits from the protection of its coastal cliffs — the Las Galletas sites often remain diveable even in bad weather to the north.

📅

Booking advised

Despite the low season, places are limited on our trips. We advise booking at least 48 hours in advance, especially for boat sites.
